What can you put in a dumpster?
Most of what comes out of a house, yard or jobsite is accepted: furniture, junk, construction and demolition debris, green waste, roofing, concrete and dirt. The prohibited list is short and comes down to hazardous, liquid, pressurized or regulated material.
Accepted in any of our containers
Load these freely, keeping the material level with the top rail.
- Household junk, furniture, mattresses, carpet and boxes
- Construction and demolition debris: lumber, drywall, cabinets, doors, windows
- Roofing shingles, tile and underlayment
- Concrete, asphalt, brick, block, pavers and dirt — in a lowboy
- Yard waste, branches, sod and landscaping debris
- Office furniture, fixtures, shelving and retail displays
Never accepted
These are regulated in California and cannot go in a roll-off at any size.
- Liquid paint, stains, solvents, motor oil and fuel
- Hazardous chemicals, asbestos and contaminated soil
- Tires, car batteries and propane tanks
- Refrigerators, freezers and air conditioners containing refrigerant
- Televisions, monitors and other e-waste
- Medical waste and anything sealed under pressure
Where those items should go instead
Orange County operates household hazardous waste collection centers that take paint, chemicals, batteries and e-waste from residents free of charge. Tire shops and auto parts stores take tires and batteries. Appliance retailers usually haul away refrigerant appliances when they deliver a replacement.
Dried-out latex paint with the lid off is often accepted as solid waste — liquid paint never is.
Mixed loads are fine, with one rule
You do not need to sort junk by type. Keep heavy debris such as concrete and dirt in a dedicated lowboy instead of mixing it into a general trash box — that is a weight rule, not a sorting rule, and it keeps you out of overweight charges.
